Last night we gave our Airfield Talk to Stewkley. We would like to say how much we enjoyed visiting the group! Our talk on RAF Wing went down really well. We have some more information to add in, as well as more research that we intend to do. Our next talk is in Leighton Buzzard in two weeks, more information to follow!

Milton Keynes Archaeology Day, Saturday 9^th November

This popular and free open day includes talks and activities for all ages plus stands and displays by local societies, archaeological units, metal detectorists, and the Portable Antiquities Scheme.  Held from 10am to 4pm in Milton Keynes Central Library, Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes MK9 3HL.

The day’s first speaker at 11am is medieval pottery expert Paul Blinkhorn, a well known face from his appearances on TV’sTime Team, Pub Dig and many other shows.  Paul will be presenting his talk Carry on Trowelling which will be a light-hearted look at the history of archaeology in the media.

During the interval (12 – 2pm) the Council for British Archaeology, South Midlands Group will be hosting an archaeology and heritage book stall.

At 2pm we welcome Cecily Cropper of MFL Archaeology to speak on the subject of Forensic Archaeology: UK and International.  Cecily has worked on crime scenes in the UK in addition to post-conflict and disaster exhumation / excavation programmes in Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq and beyond.  Her talk will explore the development of this branch of archaeology from the 1980s onwards and look at its application through a number of case studies. Please note: This talk is not suitable for younger children 

Don’t forget to bring along any finds or artefacts to be identified by Ros Tyrrell & Julie Cassidy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, who will be joined by displays from members of the Magiovinium Metal Detector Club and friends.  Displays of recent work by the CLASP Community Landscape & Archaeology Survey Project, Wing Heritage Project, and the Upper Nene Archaeological Society will complement a new Discover MK exhibition on Archaeology in Milton Keynes.

Upstairs in the Lending Library a team from ASC Ltd will be hosting Hands-On Archaeology Workshops featuring a range of activities for ages 8+. These practical sessions are on a drop-in basis from 10am to 3pm, come for 5 minutes or 35 minutes.

There will also be ‘Digging Dinosaurs’ a themed story time for age 7s and under in the children’s library at 11am

Another dig down today, now we know that part of Moorhills Road was not part of a settlement area. Next week’s digs go back to the main part of the village again, so hopefully we might find out more!!

Thank you to all those that came to the library today. It was great to meet so many of you. Martin and myself hope that you found the day interesting! For those that couldn’t attend today we will be in the Queen’s Head on Wednesday from 8pm.

Some of you have expressed an interest in the old Dormer house at Ascott and what it was. Over the next few weeks I will update here on what we know at the moment. Though be warned it might all change with the digs!

Questions were also asked about what we intend to find. For those of you who are Time Team fans you will know that sometimes they set out to find things and find something completely different! We are missing certain parts of the village which we are hoping the digs will be able to shed light on. We are unsure of the Prehistoric sites, Roman and Saxon parts of the village and these are the areas we would love to discover more about. So watch this space!

We are looking for information on Moorhills House, now Redwood Drive. We know that it was there in the 1970s but only have maps to go on. Does anyone have pictures or an idea of how old the house was? We know what happened to it, Jubilee Green is part of the original grounds, but what was it like?

A big thank you to everyone who has been in touch one way or another. Making a list this morning and sending out emails I had a double-take with the number I was sending out! We have had such a great response but keep the help coming! Without the people of Wing, Burcott and Ascott to offer their support we wouldn’t have a project!

Soon we will be going out and digging in people’s gardens. What will we find? What will it tell us about Wing? Exciting opportunities to find out who we are. Some of you will be new to Wing, others part of old families going back generations. Whatever your interest it will be an amazing few months and something we are all looking forward to!
