Long Spinney

This is a piece of woodland in between Burcott and Wing. Thanks to Alex from Wing Ops we have been able to track the name down to a Buckinghamshire phrase for a wooded area or streamlet. This name is based upon Old English.

We have now been able to piece together the history of the Spinney. It was created around the time the land was sold to Lord Overstone between 1850 and 1875, prior to that it wasn’t recorded.

During the war it was chopped down for wood and then replanted after it. It was part of the land for Burcott Hall which is now Burcott Hall Farm.

Though the wood is not ancient or old it is still an important part of our heritage. There is currently a project to open Long Spinney to the public again, please let the Parish Clerk know if you are interested in helping, wingparishclerk@gmail.com
